Striking the Serpent is a powerful, introspective course designed for Catholic men who are ready to confront their weaknesses and vice and claim their strength in Christ. Through honest reflection and practical self-examination, this course challenges men to face the internal battles that shape their actions, and provides tools and insights for building healthy and holy relationships, rooted in the Lord. This 6-session video course is led by Father Michael Stalla of the Diocese of Cleveland, OH.

Session 1: A Vision of a Happy, Healthy, and Holy Marriage

  • Consider the type of man I would want my daughter to marry.
    • How can I model a good man for her?
    • What needs would your husband meet for your daughter?
    • What does our faith envision for a marriage?

Session 2: Shame

  • Why do I do what I don’t want to do and don’t do what I want to do?
  • Looking to Alessandro as a model of having the courage to face the reality that I have fallen far from my own hopes of who I want to be.

Session 3: Am I a Good Person?

  • Explore the duality of who we want to be and what we do.
  • How do I maintain self-respect while being free to be self-critical?
  • Look at the underlying themes of the great work Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde. My good nature must protect the world against my bad nature.
  • Taking responsibility of my brokenness.

Session 4: When did I Become a Slave?

  • How did I get here?
  • What vices seemed harmless but led to addiction?
  • What lies was I sold by the culture?
  • How did my pride prevent me from correcting course?
  • Why am I so weak to lust?

Session 5: Self-Mastery

  • Recognizing and naming the needs that I have been using sin to cope.
  • What is a healthy coping mechanism?
  • How does penance promote virtue?
  • How do escape the cycle of being manipulated or manipulating others?

Session 6: Who's is the Real Man?

  • Seeing Jesus as my model.
  • Learn to lead, protect, nurture, and be respected.
  • How do I manage my anger, fear, insecurity, and expectations in a helpful way?
  • How do I resolve conflict and pick my battles?
  • How do I go beyond a fantasy relationship into a real, passionate, dynamic, and loving relationship?
  • Reflecting on my spouses and my motivations behind our actions and words.
  • Matching energy as a way of leading, not reacting.
