Into the Depths of His Love

How vast is the Bridegroom’s love for me?  How deep is His mercy?  How endless is His Presence?  These are questions which I have been blessed to ponder over these last few weeks as I sat gazing upon the ocean.  Sitting quietly along the shore, I have been inspired with awe at the depth and mystery of the sea.  And then the Lord spoke quietly to my heart as He whispered, “This wonder that you see, is a reflection of who I am.  Look upon the majesty and beauty of it… all for you, my bride.”

He was revealing Himself to me in a new and awesome way.  As I began to open my heart to His Word, it became so clear to me that the powerful Atlantic Ocean that I had been gazing upon and marveling over, is completely reflective of Him in so many beautiful ways.  

The ocean is vast and infinite. It stretches beyond what the eye can see, just as the love, mercy, and Presence of Jesus, my Bridegroom does.  I will never reach the end of Him.

“Your love, Lord, reaches to the heavens, your faithfulness to the skies.”  Psalm 36:5

The ocean is deep and mysterious. The depths of the ocean hold mysteries that humans will never fully comprehend, just as Jesus, my Bridegroom is a mystery.  His divinity, His sacrifice, and His grace are deeper than I will ever fully understand.

“Oh, the depth of the riches and wisdom and knowledge of God!”  Romans 11:33

The ocean is powerful and life-giving.  It gives life, carries power in its waves, and cannot be tamed by man.  Jesus, my Bridegroom, is the source of life and holds divine power.  He calms the storms both on the sea as well as in my heart.

“Even the wind and waves obey Him.”  Mark 4:41

The ocean is wide and majestic, just like the glory of Jesus, my Bridegroom who comes in splendor.  He invites me, His bride, to a wedding feast where mercy flows like waves.

“As the bridegroom rejoices over the bride, so shall your God rejoice over you.”  Isaiah 62:5

The ocean is always in motion… waves ebbing and flowing, and yet it remains the ocean.  Jesus, my Bridegroom is the same yesterday, today, and forever and yet His spirit is moving constantly in my life.

“Jesus Christ is the same yesterday and today and forever.”  Hebrews 13:8

The ocean draws me in.  Just as I am drawn to the sea for rest, wonder, and renewal, so is my soul drawn to Jesus, my Bridegroom for His peace, His healing, and His love.  Standing on the shore can feel like standing in worship of my Bridegroom… I am so small, and yet fully seen, known, and loved.

"Draw me in your footsteps, let us run."  Song of Songs 1:4

In the storms of life, His voice calms the sea, just as my Bridegroom protects and comforts me,  His beloved.  He is as powerful as the swells which are brought about by the storm, and yet He is as gentle as this same wave which, when it reaches the beach, kisses the shoreline.  

“...as Christ loved the Church and gave himself up for her, that he might sanctify her, having cleansed her by the washing of water with the word...”  Ephesians 5:25-26

As a bride, I step into the waters of my Bridegroom’s love, not merely to be sprinkled, but to be immersed, surrounded, carried.  Jesus does not offer shallow affection.  He invites me into deep communion, where His love is like the ocean… uncharted, embracing, and overwhelming in the most delightful way.  Like the tide that comes without fail, so too my Bridegroom comes in faith.  His promises are like the ocean, never running dry, always returning, always bringing His love.  And even when I drift, He calls me back like the waves arriving at the shore.

“I have loved you with an everlasting love; I have drawn you with unfailing kindness.”  Jeremiah 31:3

My heart is floating.  Thank You, Jesus.

Jesus, my Bridegroom,

Like the ocean, You are vast, unsearchable, alive.

You have swept me into a deeper love than I deserve.

Let me not fear the deep.

Let me walk on the waters toward You.

Let me be one with You,

bathed in Your mercy,

held by Your tide,

faithful to Your heart.
